FAQ
What qualification do you get at the end of your training?
Successful students will be awarded with the MTA diploma
Why isn't MTA accredited?
According to current guidelines courses have to be able to track the progress of graduated students for 3 years before being considered for accreditation. As MTA is a new college we are unable to provide that evidence until 2013.
Why isn't the course eligible for help from Career Development Loans?
Current guidelines for eligibility on the CDL register state that a course must be running for one year before it can apply to go on the register. MTA will be applying for registration in 2010.
Why does MTA think that 2 years is enough, when all the other colleges insist on 3 year programmes?
Accelerated courses have become more main steam in recent years (medical training has gone from 5 years to 3 years in some schools, for example). We believe that the more intense nature of the course actually prepares you better for the demands of the industry. On traditional 3 year courses you spend the summer months sitting at home missing your college friends, paying for classes to keep up your stamina, getting extra singing lessons etc. At MTA the absence of long holidays ensure that you really do make every moment of your training count.
How can I trust a new college?
The Principal has 20 years experience developing courses within Further and Higher education, in both academic and vocational colleges and has an extensive, high-profile professional career as both an MD and a composer. MTA was started to provide an ethical training ground specialising in Musical Theatre. It's never been a dance/acting/singing course, which has then expanded to train Musical Theatre performers. MTA is being advised and supported by leading industry figures, all of whom believe in the principles of MTA. MTA is a very different sort of college - you will see that from the moment you go and audition. Meet the staff and then you will know immediately why you can trust a new college.
Do you do any other courses?
Unlike many other colleges MTA will only ever run the 2 year Musical Theatre course. By concentrating on the one course with no desire to expand and take over the world of training, MTA can assure every student that the current needs of a professional performer are being met, without diversifying into smaller courses.
Is there a 1 year option?
At MTA we are confident that we can turn your weaknesses into strengths after 2 years of intensive study. We believe that it takes a minimum of 2 years to train a contemporary Musical Theatre professional. Training to be a performer is an arduous journey and we would only want to send you out into the real world when we were confident that you were equip to deal with all eventualities.
Why do you only take 20 students?
MTA does not want to be a large conglomerate college - its inception was to provide first class training for 40 students (20 students per year) ensuring that no student gets lost in the crowd. We are confident that we can give 20 students per year top class professional training without losing the personal touch.
Why don't you send out prospectuses?
MTA is doing its part to aid the worldwide quest to save the planet. As much as possible we are attempting to be paper free. With most people having access to the internet we can cut down are carbon footprint considerably by doing most of our paperwork online. With more and more online casting agencies, we predict that it won't be too much longer before all submissions are done online so you'd better start getting used to it now!
How can we check up on you if there are no previous students?
This is a tricky one as obviously MTA is brand new so there are no previous students that you can meet to vouch for the course. If you are successful on the audition day and are fortunate enough to be offered a place, on request, we can put you in contact with a number of students who have been trained on courses written and run by the Principal. Whilst these professionals will be unable to comment directly on the MTA course, they will be able to answer any questions that you might have about the person who runs it. Blatantly this is only an issue for the first year's entry.
